Janis was one of the founders of the CAiSE conference series, a leader of our research community, and a beloved colleague and friend. His research spanned Information Systems Development Methods, Performance Analysis, Databases, Conceptual Modeling, and Enterprise Modeling. In later years his focus turned to Requirements Engineering and Enterprise Modeling, carried out from leading positions in European Commission–funded projects. In the late 1980s, together with Professor Arne Sølvberg, he founded the CAiSE conference — first arranged in Sweden in May 1989. That event became the key venue for the research community of Information Systems Engineering.

Matthias was among the first committee members of the CAiSE conference series — a visionary computer scientist, highly respected by his students and colleagues. His foundational research in requirements engineering, meta-modelling, and data warehousing laid the groundwork for modern software systems, earning him election as a Fellow of the ACM and a member of acatech, the German National Academy of Science and Engineering. Matthias supported CAiSE over decades as author, programme board chair, and conference programme chair, including Heidelberg (1999) and Thessaloniki (2014).
